Literacy is a shared responsibility.

OpenBooks connects middle school students with trained community volunteers for structured, evidence-based reading sessions — building confidence and closing the literacy gap one session at a time.

Four realities exist side by side.

Many middle school students struggle to read well enough to access their learning. With the right structure, communities can change that.

OUR APPROACH

The kids who need the most support are the least likely to get it in a classroom.

Too many middle schoolers are falling behind in reading — not because they can’t learn, but because there aren’t enough hands. OpenBooks gives volunteers and community partners a simple, structured way to fill that gap. No teaching experience needed.
Every student deserves someone in their corner who believes reading can change everything.

FAQ

Common Questions

Everything you need to know about getting involved with OpenBooks.
How does OpenBooks work?

OpenBooks provides volunteers with a simple, structured reading program designed for middle school students. Each session follows the same repeatable format — no teaching experience required.

Who can volunteer?

Anyone with a desire to help and a few hours a week. Our tools are designed so that non-specialists can lead effective sessions from day one.

What kinds of organizations can partner with OpenBooks?

Community organizations, nonprofits, faith communities, and civic groups can all become OpenBooks partners. We provide the structure — you bring the volunteers.

How are students identified?

OpenBooks works with teachers and schools to identify middle school students who would benefit most from structured reading support outside of the classroom.

What does a session look like?

Every session follows the same 8-step routine: Wake It Up → Match It → Build It → Stack It → Write It → Read It → Fix It → Practice It. Consistency is what allows students to succeed.
